Freewheelin Farm Vision
After years of working in agriculture, I learned valuable skills in food production, but
came to identify obstacles to community and ecological sustainability that continue to
plague our agricultural system. Freewheelin' Farm is the inception of my dream to overcome these obstacles and live the principles I believe while supporting others who do the same. The vision is to provide the healthiest possible food to my community while minimizing my contribution to the oil dependent and profit driven economy.
LOCAL, ORGANIC AND FRESH
Like many local farms, Freewheelin' Farm does not use any synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. I take care to preserve the quality and quantity of the soil and groundwater on the land.
Because Freewheelin' Farm is smaller than most local organic farms, weighing in at less than one acre, I am able to give careful attention to the ecosystem being created while maximizing the use of my resources. With the farm just 5 miles north of Santa Cruz, I am able to harvest and deliver within hours, resulting in the freshest possible produce coming straight to your door.
ENERGY
All Freewheelin' Farm deliveries are made by bike and trailer. One less truck on the road ! Additionally,
I consider the pros and cons of each gallon of petroleum product used in the farming process. While Freewheelin’ Farm is not petroleum free (yet) I make every attempt to use as little as possible.
Nine things that help reduce the use of petroleum and other inputs on the farm are the chickens.
Not only do they provide us with great eggs, they also do the tough work of eating bugs and weeds, scratching up the soil and of course fertilizing everywhere they go. Their mobile hutch and run keep them on the move eating up fresh patches of green weeds and prepping the soil for the next planting.
COMMUNITY
Most of the food grown at Freewheelin’ Farm makes its way directly to those who eat it through our Community Supported Agriculture program. “Members” of the program commit to support the farm through one growing season and in exchange receive a weekly bag of fresh
harvested goodies delivered straight to their door or available for pick up on the farm. By selling food directly to those who will eat it, we cut out the middlewo/men who buy and resell food. By doing this, the farmer and the consumer share the bounty together each getting more food and more money for their efforts. I aim to provide just prices in an effort to make eating healthy and local an affordable option for everyone.
